Bronze Hall, Xiantong Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, China

The Bronze Hall is near the rear of Xiantong Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi. Its inside is lined with small bronze figures of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Built in the Ming Dynasty, it is one of only three bronze temple halls in all of China. The pagodas that stand before it are bronze as well.

Arhats Overhead, Jinge Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, China

In a clever use of limited space, Jinge Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, arranged its 500 Arhats in the rafters over the floor of the main hall. Impressive--and a little creepy. The temple is associated with the Indian Vajrayana master Amoghavajra, and was built to promote devotion to Manjushri.

Stupa, Tayuan Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, China

Wutai Shan, Shanxi, is dedicated to Manjushri Bodhisattva (Wenshu Pusa). This figure at Shuxiang ("Manjushri Image") Temple is the tallest and most magnificent figure of the Bodhisattva on the mountain. He is shown riding a suan ni, a lion-like son of a dragon, instead of the usual lion.

Vairocana Buddha, Bishan Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, China

Vairocana Buddha and attendants in the main hall at Bishan Temple, Wutai Shan, Shanxi. Bishan means "Jade (or Green) Mountain," but it may be a play on an older name, Beishan; Bishan is the furthest north (bei) of any temple in the valley where Wutai's only town, Taihuai, is located.

Gate, Shifang Tang, Wutai Shan, Shanxi, China

The front gate of Shifang Tang on Wutai Shan, Shanxi, a temple in the Tibetan tradition. The two deer facing the dharma wheel above the gate represent the Buddha's first sermon, called "The Turning of the Wheel of Dharma," given at the Deer Park in Sarnath.
