Old Yamato

Ancient Yamato is one of the oldest capital regions of Japan, encompassing modern Asuka and Nara and, in some ways, stretching down to include Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture.

Upon finishing my long walk down the Old Tokaido, I stopped in at Nara and Asuka for pleasure, and at Koyasan as a necessary preliminary (and, later, post-liminary) to my pilgrimage on Shikoku Island. The first two days primarily involved pleasant day-walks; the last two days included paying reverence to the remains of Kobo Daishi, the great "saint" of the Shikoku pilgrimage.

My original account of this visit can be found in my Aki Meguri pages. I hope to update and expand the information about these sites later.
