Other Temples in China

Mammoth Vairochana Buddha at Longmen Grottoes, Luoyang, Henan

In addition to visiting 132 of China's 142 Key Temples (to be continued), I have visited roughly an equal number of notable sites, from the massive Temple of Heaven in Beijing to the crumbling, nearly-gone walls of Chengde's Luohan-tang; from the small neighborhood temples of my home base in Shenzhen to the famed Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang; from the humble (putative) birthplace of Master Xingyun--founder of the global Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order--to the Refuge Rock near Shaoguan, in which Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Zen), is said to have hidden from a forest fire set by an angry mob.

Most of these sites are Buddhist by association, whether temples or rocks. Others are more Daoist/folk, and some are merely historical/cultural (like the Terra Cotta warriors outside of Xi'an). But all are a window into the culture that gave rise to Chinese Buddhism.

"Refuge Rock" where Huineng allegedly hid from an angry mob, Shaoguan, Guangdong

The heaviest concentration of "others" is naturally in Shenzhen, where I lived for over a decade. Another solid grouping is in Yangzhou, where I spent a year living and working in a temple. Other largish groupings were easy to reach when I visited, among others, Beijing, Datong, Xi'an, Shijiazhuang, Putuo Shan, Ningde, and Guangzhou (just up the road from Shenzhen).

In most cases, it was just a matter of being in the place with time on my hands. In others--such as the extraordinary sites outside of Datong--my visits were well-planned assaults. But sometimes, the list was expanded by serendipity. When I was visiting Fuzhou, a good monk friend took me to his hometown of Fu'an in a (borrowed) car and showed me around.

The Temple of Heaven, Beijing

Another interesting aspect of this list is to notice what's not here. I have never been to Tiananmen Square or Beijing's Forbidden City, nor to any of the touristy sections of The Great Wall (though I've seen vestiges). I only visited the Temple of Heaven in Beijing at the insistence of my sponsor/host: when the guy putting you up in one of Beijing's most expensive hotel says, "I think you should go see..."--you go see it!

A folk temple (for the Earth God) inside Shenzhen's Dapeng Fortress

Wherever possible, I have arranged this list in more or less the same geographic order as the 142 Key Temples. (Shenzhen is an outlier, with the most temples on the list, and none of the 142.) The numbering is arbitrary; in fact, as I either (a) visit more temples or (b) add more that I find hidden in my files, I'll probably just stick them onto the end of the list. (Ay! It's happened already! See #146!)

Incidentally, the "Visited" dates sometimes note only one out of many visits. In that case, the one mentioned may be the first, the last, or the one when the most photos were taken! I'll include further details as I write up each site.

Enjoy!
