Yuantong Temple in downtown Kunming, Yunnan, China has a peculiar feature: after entering the front gate, instead of climbing up to the Main Hall, as at most temples, the stairs lead down. The temple is located in a giant pit. Instead of a courtyard, the buildings are placed in and around a pond!
