The Nanhai Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara of the South Seas) stands 33 meters tall, the number sacred to Guanyin. The statue, built in the late '90s, is a key site on Putuo Island, the "mountain" sacred to Guanyin (one of four such in China dedicated to the "Four Great Bodhisattvas").
